I have just been diagnosed with BCC on the bridge of my nose. I am terrified to look at the pictures of what to expect, but I don't want to be shocked once surgery is done. Okay, should I or shouldn't I? Also I was under the impression the skin graft flap was done at the same time...sounds like that is not the case. ARGH!!

Just found out today that I have a BCC above my lip.Last year my derm told me it was a sebaceous cyst but was wrong. It is hard not to be upset since I had BCC eight years ago on my forehead and had MOHS with no.I am 40 years old and scared to death that this one went untreated for over a year.My father died of melanoma at age 57 so it pains me that this was missed. Are there any suggestions or helpful hints to let me know that my nose and/or lip won't be disfigured after the surgery?

Reply to webmaster Hi Julie,
I know it's always a distressing moment for anyone when they learn about having a BCC or any form of skin cancer. Since you've had BCC before at least you have something to compare what you are faced with at this time. As for it being there a year I guess in your favor is that for the most part Basal Cell is fairly slow growing. So hopefully it's still contained in a small area.

I would ask the doctor that is going to do the MOHS surgery to show you some pictures of other similar cases they have done. The doctor that did my last nose reconstruction showed me several pictures of patients he had worked on and that really gave me a better idea of what the outcome was probably going to be. It helps alot to have confidence in the doctor, if you have doubts maybe consider a second opinion.

Personally I think your going to be just fine, you've been through it before and your body is still young enough to heal very well. I'm glad you found the site and I hope my experience helps.

Reply to webmaster It is scary to see the hole left from the Mohs surgery before the cosmetic surgery is done. Since the basal cell grows inward, it's not just what you see on the surface that has to be removed. However the Mohs is the least invasive, removing only whats necessary to take out the skin cancer, vs taking a large part at once and hoping it's gone.

Good luck with the reconstruction, I'm sure it will go well for you. Just remember, time is on your side now. Before the Mohs it wasn't but now as you go forward through the healing process it is. The body has a remarkable way of healing if we give it the proper care and time.

Glad you enjoyed the site, contact me any time if you have questions.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Has anyone had a problem with incision opening up after stitches are removed? Had Mohs 2 weeks ago (4 procedures till clear). Stitches were removed 1 week later. Next day, a small spot was open and oozy. Over next days this opened more until I have a hole that is red, sore and oozy. Have been put on antibiotics & a salve, but still not healing 1 week later. Has anyone else had this happen?

Reply to webmaster I haven't had that happen myself but I would think that it would still heal up after a little time. Probably will leave more of a scar though. When I had the forehead flap done, there was a spot about the size of a dime at the top of my forehead that couldn't be closed with stitches. It was pretty deep too but it eventually filled in and healed over. Left a slight depression but isn't very noticeable now.

It would probably be a good idea to contact your doctor and find out for sure what to do about it.

Had spot on my upper lip that I thought was some sort of mole. Around 15 months it started to collapse and I thought it was going away. It didnt and had Mohs 7 days ago. Was scared of scar but had great doctor. Pain was alot worse than I thought during and directly after but 1 week later Im 90 percent healed and unless your very close cannot tell I had anything which is amazing because last Friday my top lip was below my bottom lip!!!

Hi, I am due to have a similar operation on the side of my nose. I had a Moh' s procedure in 2001 and it was fine and after the initial healing I had no problems. They took the cartilage and skin from the inside on my ear and "filled" the hole and it was barely noticable. But here I go again..Thank you for sharing you photos of the Forehead flap.. I may be in line for it this time!

I am scheduled for MOHS surgery in two weeks on a bcc on the bridge of my nose near the tip. I am in a state of panic about the procedure itself...pain, being awake during the cutting, etc. I wish I could have it done with a general anaesthetic...I'm terrified of being awake and knowing that they're operating on me. What have people experienced? Thanks.

Reply to webmaster Hi Jay,
I'm sorry to hear about your situation but let me share some thoughts based on what I went through. First of all it's not nearly as bad as what you are thinking it will be. But I totally understand what you are feeling at this point. I felt the same way before the Mohs but looking back it was really less of an ordeal than getting a tooth pulled at the dentist.

The only pain I had was the shots to numb my nose, everything after that was just a feeling of pulling or pressure on the nose. I just closed my eyes and it was over real quick. I think you are going to be just fine and once it's over you'll be able to look back and agree.

Feel free to contact me from the Contact page on this site linked to at the bottom of every page in the main part of the site.

Reply to webmaster Gail has been in touch with me through the contact form on this site. She (I believe) has a BCC just under the eye near the tear duct. I hope to hear from Gail again and learn how this has turned out.

I have a newly diagnosed squamous cell carcinoma and they want to do MOHS. Trouble is I have to travel to Europe for up to a month. Is there any danger in wiating that long for the surgery? The lesions was about 1/8-1/4 inch but seemed to have come up in about six weeks

Reply to webmaster Hi Maureen,
My thoughts would be to not wait unless your doctors were in agreement with that. These cancers can be very slow growing or they can happen very fast, hard to tell what yours is doing. One thing to remember is that what you see on the outside is often just the tip of the matter. There can be a lot more happening under the surface that we don't see.

I think you should certainly want to have a doctor tell you that it was OK to wait a moth before I'd take that chance.

I had Mohs for bcc on the bridge of the nose two weeks ago and the scar is looking good, but there is a big lump of swelling at the bottom of the scar and a little bruising across the bridge. The insicion is about an inch long. The defect size was about as big around as pencil, so they just stretched the skin closed. My concern is the swelling. It looks a lot different than my original nose. Doe's anyone know how long it takes for swelling to go down, or is it going to stay like this?

Reply to webmaster Hi Dale,
Thanks for commenting and it sounds like you are doing just fine. The swelling can take several weeks to even a couple of months to really go away and six months to a year before it actually looks 'normal' again. The main thing is that you don't have BCC any longer and that's always a good thing!
